About urbanism

What makes a city strong?

At Civic Louisville, we believe that walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods are the foundation of every great city. When schools and jobs are close, homes cater to every age and size of family, and the sidewalks come alive with neighborly conversation, a mere location is transformed into a community.

This development model is called "urbanism" today, but it was the standard practice in nearly every North American city prior to the 1950s. It is more sustainable - economically, socially, and environmentally - than the car-dependent suburban style that dominates today.

Our mission is to raise awareness about the many benefits of urbanism and inspire grassroots action to bring them to life in Louisville.
